Plan how to carry artwork home

Discuss dimensions, materials, packing and any applicable transport rules before buying artwork during a Ghana trip.

Measure before paying

Ask for the item's dimensions and weight, then compare them with your actual baggage allowance. Include the packaging, not just the object. A piece that fits in your hands may not fit safely in a bag.

Check whether fragile or projecting parts can be protected without altering the work.

Ask the maker about handling

Find out how the material responds to pressure, moisture and temperature changes. Ask what packing the seller can provide and whether it is included. Don't assume decorative wrapping is transport protection.

For shipping, obtain a separate quote with responsibility, insurance and delivery terms clearly stated.

Check the rules for the specific item

Before purchasing, verify applicable export, import and carrier requirements for the material and destination, especially for antiques or restricted materials. Use the relevant authorities and airline for current rules.

At Aburi Craft Village or another craft stop, keep the receipt and maker's description. Choose an item you can transport appropriately rather than hoping to resolve the problem at the airport.

Rules, fees and opening hours change. Confirm anything that matters before you rely on it.
